Charlotte Bowles is a clone of Project Leda introduced in the finale of Season 2. She is an eight-year-old girl who is disabled in one leg. She lived with her adoptive mother Marion Bowles until she was abducted by the Neolutionists at some unknown point in time during Season 3.
Origins[]
Charlotte is the sole survivor of over 400 attempts to recreate a clone from the batch of Project Leda. She was created twenty years after the other Leda clones. The original genome the female clones were based on was lost in a fire twenty years before Charlotte was created. Several Project Leda scientists died in the fire, one of whom was thought to be Susan Duncan. Ethan Duncan claimed Aldous Leekie set the fire.
It is revealed in Season 4 that Charlotte was directly cloned from Rachel Duncan and that she suffers from an early onset version of the Leda clone respiratory degeneration.
Season 3[]
Her next appearance is within a hallucinating Sarah Manning, who has been following a rare reaction to the Castor clones' defect, although it is uncertain whether the girl Sarah saw was truly Charlotte or merely a younger version of herself or any other Leda clone. In her dream, Charlotte ushers Sarah to follow her, before disappearing as she is left to encounter a hallucination of Beth Childs.
Later on Charlotte appears to have been kidnapped by Neolution. The circumstances of her abduction are currently unknown. Captured by the Neolutionists, Susan explained to Charlotte that Rachel, who was also captured by Neolution, could be her new mother.
Orphan Black: The Next Chapter Audio Series[]
Season 1[]
Charlotte first appears visiting her Aunt Cosima and Aunt Delphine in their old Victorian house in the city. She lives in the basement when she is there. She stays with them in the city sometimes while her father Art Bell is busy or she needs to have assistance with her papers for school. She is into the science end of things very much like her aunts.
She was doing research and saw Dana Emmett in a photo online, Dana appeared sick. This was a shock for all involved as Dana was not on the Clone List that Rachel gave Felix all those years ago. They soon learn there are others that did not make it on that list either. Several being Vivi Valdez and a host of clones that Dana grew up with. They are known as the "Cousins" as they grew up together, each family being made up of scientists and raised the clones together.
"Charlotte stared at the woman—the clone—in the hospital bed. It was frightening: the mottled splotch crawling from beneath her hospital gown like some kind of living thing, the wheezing catch in her breath. This wasn’t the clone sickness, the cure for which rested against Charlotte’s hip. This was something else entirely." - Audio Series, Charlotte meeting Dana
She went to Boston with Alison to give Dana the Clone Vaccine and then found out that Dana did not have the Clone disease, she had something else, focused possibly on the LEDA Clone Genome. Not long after arriving to see Dana, Charlotte gets sick with the new Clone Virus.
