Development[]
It is being produced by Temple Street Productions in association with AMC Networks. Its greenlighting was officially announced on April 6, 2022.[13][14] The original series' co-creator John Fawcett is returning as a director and executive producer, with Anna Fishko being Echoes's creator and showrunner.[5]
When news of the series being in development first broke in 2019, it was said that this was not going to be a direct "spinoff or reboot of the original series, but rather a completely new story set in the same world."[15]
On May 31, 2024 Fishko, the series showrunner went onto say that she “did a lot of research about human-tissue printing... [but] it turned out [that] a lot of the things we had been imagining are things they have already been doing...They are already printing little tiny hearts that can beat and they are printing brain tissue and it’s easier for them to print sloppier organs that don’t have to hold their structure. So they can print a bladder, for example...". In addition, an expert in tissue printing from North Carolina’s Wake Forest University was brought in to work with the writers room as a consultant.[16]
On June 10, 2024, there was a red carpet premiere event held for the series.[17]
On June 24, 2024, it was confirmed that Julien Baker, from the band Boygenius released “The Lengths,” the theme song for Orphan Black: Echoes, described as a "haunting song" which was made with Calvin Lauber, Baker’s longtime recording engineer, and features Baker’s layered vocals delivering an aching, longing message: “Do you really wanna know how much? / The lengths I’d go to touch the smallest pieces of you?”[18]
On June 28, 2024 Fawcett and Fishko said back when he and Graeme Manson were getting ready to end the original series, a lot of the discussion was about Kira. And those conversations ended up becoming conversations that happened with Anna as they were leading the development of Echoes. It is set just far enough in the future that things feel just slightly off in a discomfiting way. In addition, there are photos of the OG clones on Kira’s desk as well as a few cameo appearances.[19]
By July 18, 2024, AMC Networks began to further promote the premiere of Orphan Black Echoes across their various sister channels and their streaming service AMC+.[20]
On August 19, 2024, Fishko addressed whether or not Sarah is now aware of what Kira has been doing saying, we do think that Sarah Manning probably has heard in the sense that we imagine them all to be somewhat in contact," Fishko explained. "So I think we probably do imagine that Sarah at that point has heard—though Cosima Niehaus would keep her confidence if she asked her to. But yes, I think we did imagine when we were originally talking about it that Sarah probably had heard."[21]
Trivia[]
- As of June 18, 2024, a Limited Edition Orphan Black: Echoes x Sloomoo slime, which looks like the pink liquid that Lucy comes out in some promotional image, is now available for purchase on the AMC Merch shop.[22]
- On June 21, 2024 Ritter said that since the "spinoff is set in the same world, there’s going to be easter eggs and exciting things for fans of the original, but it really is its own story. [Moreover,] the structure of the show is different, because the structure of the show is different, since she is not playing eight characters like Tatiana Maslany..."[23]
- On June 24, 2024 Ritter mentioned how she learned ASL and Spanish for her role as Lucy.[24]
- On June 28, 2024, John Fawcett mentioned how as the series ended in 2017, nobody involved with Orphan Black really wanted to leave the world behind... One of the ideas they discussed was at some point in the future, it would be great reunite with characters like Alison Hendrix and Rachel Duncan and what they were doing in the future. Ultimately, they settled (for now) on a spinoff with an adult Kira, that is set just far enough in the future that things feel just slightly off in a discomfiting way, “Orphan Black: Echoes” tackles big themes with wit and humor.[25]
- On July 17, 2024, it was announced that Boat Rocker Studios had signed a new licensing deal with Heathside Trading for the Orphan Black franchise in the U.K., Europe and the U.S. In addition, Heathside would launch a range of products for Orphan Black and Orphan Black: Echoes beginning in Q4 of 2024 through retail partners covering fan memorabilia, collectables and gift categories, including trading cards, action figures, vinyl figures, drinkware, slime and backpack keychains.[26]
- On August 18, 2024, Ritter revealed that the pink goo itself was all glucose, so she was just floating. Since there’s no gravity in there, so they had to make a 70-pound belt to hold her hips down, and even then, her feet and head were floating up.[27]
- On August 25, 2024 it was confirmed that Tatiana Maslany was approached to reprise at least one of the LEDA clones. They had even set out a whole episode in the back half of the season, but in the end, it just didn’t work out in terms of schedule. Unfortunately she was shooting at exactly the same time they were shooting for this series and they just couldn’t make it work out.[28]
- Season 1 of the series will be released on Blu-ray by November 5, 2024, [29]
- On August 26, 2024, Fishko confirmed that the series has not been cancelled, and that conversations surrounding more episodes are still "ongoing". She further mentioned how, "We're really hoping for a Season 2, [and] [i]t's definitely on the table and a conversation that's ongoing with AMC".[30]
