Summary[]
Kira confronts hard truths when the printout she made of Eleanor meets Lucy, while Jules tries to turn the tables on Darros and Xander to escape the compound.
Plot[]
Kira, still reeling from seeing Josh kill himself in front of her, arrives at her home, and notices on a nearby mirror that she missed spec of her friend's blood. She still hears Josh telling her how he was just a means to the end. Much to her surprise, when she gets into the kitchen, printed-out Eleanor is waiting for her, as well as Lucy. Kira is about to say something, when Eleanor tells her wife to not lie to her, especially not at this moment. Kira asks Lucy what she is doing in her home, and the younger woman tells her she just came for her help, so Kira should not be turning this onto her. Eleanor then tells Lucy she can go now, as this is between her and Kira. But Lucy refuses, as she explains that she spoke to Neva Lee, who told her that because of her husband the people working for Paul Darros took Jules. Eventually, Lucy decides to deal with this problem herself, but not before telling Eleanor that for what it is worth, whatever she is feeling right now, does get a little better. Without beating around the bush, Eleanor asks Kira if she is a print out, but all Kira can say is that she is sorry.
After a few seconds, Kira explains how the original got so sick, to the point that she didn’t know who Lucas was or Kira. Then, despite their best efforts, Eleanor died, and Kira was so distraught, she eventually decided to bring her wife back. However, Eleanor angrily yells to Kira that death is not something Kira can just skip over. Eleanor explains that losing people is part of life, and Kira needs to ultimately work on that, because she has always been afraid of losing people. Angry, Eleanor packs a bag but before she leaves, she tells Kira that the version of Eleanor Kira loved died two years ago. She is just some strange doll Kira made because she was too scared of letting go of her.
Meanwhile, Xander and Paul are together, with the younger man apologizing. Eventually, Paul chastises Xander by telling him that it was his job to establish trust with Jules and to make her feel comfortable. The next morning, Jules wakes up on the floor with countless papers about the original Eleanor sprawled on the floor. Not long after, Xander knocks on her door, but Jules refuses to talk to him after breaking her trust. He apologizes and says to her that he knows where she was made, and it is not too far from where they are currently at. Curious, she opens her door and ultimately decides to go with him once again.
Elsewhere, Dr. Pam Teller is arriving at her office when she jumps in fright at seeing Lucy waiting for her, and holding a gun. Lucy states how she knows Pam has quite the pedigree, and as a psychologist, she is likely good at reading people. She asks Pam if she is able to read what she is currently feeling.
Xander eventually takes Jules to the printer where the two of them were made, and Jules finds the whole thing strange. Xander tries to say that it isn’t so weird if she realizes that various ways humans can conceive now with the help of science. After a while, Xander explains to Jules how according to Buddhist teachings, there are 49 days between death and rebirth and is known as bardo. This is when the soul passes onto another vessel and subsequently becomes reborn into the next one.
At Pam’s office, the corrupt psychologist tells Lucy she doesn’t have Jules because the young girl is with Darros at his compound. She taunts Lucy by saying that she will never get to her, and that Jules will be starting a new life over there because that is what’s best for her. Pam goes on to say how every thought that went into shaping who Jules is now was intentional because Jules is part of something bigger. She further taunts Lucy by saying how Paul is an exemplary man who cares about the whole Earth, and that he did let Lucy live as long as she has. To make matters worse, Pam says to Lucy that she seems agitated, and some therapy could do wonders for her. Angry, Lucy hits her with the gun across her face, and knocks her out.
At the print-out station, Xander tells Jules that he is glad she is here with him because it was quite lonely. At least now, he has someone who knows what it is like to be a print-out. According to Xander, he was printed a year ago, and has been at the compound ever since. Eventually, she gets Xander to close his eyes, and shoves some sort of nasal spray into his nose, and presses a button on the printer to close the lid on him.
Sometime in the past, a teen Paul has been hit by a family member. His sick and frail sister notices this, and the two vow to get through this hell on earth together.
The next morning, Lucy arrives at Kira’s house to find her sleeping on the couch, and a bottle of alcohol and some snacks littering the table. Lucy tells the older woman how she has been calling her for hours. She eventually tells Kira how Darros is keeping Jules prisoner at his compound. Kira reveals to Lucy that Josh killed himself in front of her the night before. She tells Lucy how it was Josh who rebuilt the printer for Darros and was quite scared of the so-called philanthropist. Lucy decides to help Kira with Eleanor, if Kira woman up and deals with the chaos she created. She then asks Kira where she thinks Eleanor would have gone.
Which as it turns out, Eleanor went to go see Lucas, who is getting a place ready for his quaker meeting.
At the compound, Paul and Tom are dealing with the system being rebooted as a result of Jules tinkering with it. Eventually, some cameras are back online, with one camera picking up that Jules is running through a wooded area. Tom is about to run after her, but Paul stops him; saying this is the perfect opportunity to use Jules to get to Lucy. When Tom asks Paul if he should do something about Xander, Paul tells his henchman that he will deal with the boy himself.
Meanwhile, Eleanor is sitting with Lucas, and telling him as much of the truth as possible. She explains that the year he was away at school, she actually had been sick. Lucas asks if she is okay now.
At Kira’s house, she talks to her deceased wife’s grave. Kira admits that as an atheist it’s kind of silly to be talking to her wife like this. But nevertheless, she explains how she really did think she could put everything back to the way it was before Eleanor got early on-set Alzheimer’s. Kira admits that for a minute, she did think she was able to do it. But in the end, like a house of cards, it all came crashing down. Especially how she now sees that even with Eleanor’s print out helping her cope, Kira couldn’t put herself back to how she used to be. Kira admits that Eleanor’s death changed her and this pushed her away.
In the woods, Jules has continued to run, and eventually finds a dog buried in a pile of wood. She helps the dog get out, and plays with the dog. Eventually, she hears a car honk. Realizing in that moment she is not too far from the road.
At Darros’ compound, Paul chastises Xander for failing him once again. He states that maybe he pushed him too hard, and that maybe he is not ready for all the responsibility after all. But Xander quickly tells Paul that is definitely ready. But Paul remains unconvinced; stating that a lot of time, effort and money went into printing out the perfect version of himself. But he retorts that in Xander’s case, he may not measure up due to a margin of error. He then tells Xander that he will find some other use for him, as nothing is ever really a waste. Before he leaves, Xander blurts out that he recalls them having a sister. He asks Paul why he never told him about her, but Paul remains quiet and leaves.
Meanwhile, Jules is walking alongside the road with a dog, and eventually comes across a gas station and finds a pay phone which she plans to use to call Craig at the Settlement House.
Elsewhere, Lucas inadvertently meets his mom’s younger print-out after Eleanor has explained everything to him. But Lucas is still reeling from the information he has received. He can’t believe it is possible since as far as he knew, the Additive Foundation wasn’t at the point of printing out full humans. Lucy eventually gets Eleanor to go with her, as Lucas does not appear to be ready for the truth, and instead, he tells her to leave and that she can’t be here with him.
Eventually, Craig arrives to pick up Jules, and asks her if she is hurt anywhere. Jules tells the older man she isn’t and gets in his car. Craig then asks her what she is going to do with the dog, and Jules says that he is coming with her.
Xander recalls what Paul said to him, and makes up his mind to also leave the compound, as he puts a backpack over his shoulder, and leaves his room.
At the gas station, Tom asks the clerk if she has any idea who Jules called, but the clerk says she does not. Eventually, the clerk tells Tom she saw Jules and her dog head north. Which is news to him that she has a dog now. The clerk explains that it was most likely a stray since there is a county shelter not too far from the gas station.
At a park, Lucy tells Eleanor that she didn’t really have to tell Lucas, but Eleanor explains that she is tired of the lies. Eleanor admits to Lucy that she feels like everything is a lie because none of the memories she has are truly hers. Lucy explains how she and Jules only have one memory of waking up in a bathroom, and there’s blood all over. She asks Eleanor if she knows what that is about, and Eleanor begins by saying how her father was clinically depressed. Being alive was so hard for him, and one day she came home from school one day, and found him dead in the bathtub after he had slit his wrists. Eventually, Lucy receives a call from Craig, but it turns out to be Jules. She tells Lucy that she is fine and tells her that she thinks it is time they fought back.
Elsewhere, Tom is on the road driving while looking for the type of dog Jules had with her.
Meanwhile, Kira gets on Josh’s laptop and listens to one of his recordings, where he mentions that Paul and Xander had lunch together, and he found it so weird. But he notes that Paul seems happy to have a mini-me version of him around. In another video, Josh is venting about how hard it is to work for Paul, and mentions a launch day. Kira looks at Josh’s calendar and sees that two days from today, is a launch day involving Paul Darros. She eventually calls Emily telling her that she needs her help.
Eventually, Tom tracks Jules, but it turns out to be a trap set by Jules, Craig and her new dog whom she named Slobber Monster. Tom goes to get his gun, but before he can even touch it, a truck comes out of nowhere, and ram into his car. This truck, as it turns out, was driven by Lucy.
Jules reunites with Lucy, and meets the Eleanor print-out and states that at least they seem to age gracefully.
Tom gets out of the wrecked car, all injured and bloodied, and collapses on the ground.
At a diner, Kira and Emily meet where she confirms that Josh was in deep with Darros and asks Kira how much she knows. Unbeknownst that she has her gun out to the side of her seat.
